Polyhedral oligomeric sesquisiloxanes (POSS), also known as cuboxanes, with the chemical formula: (RSiO3/2)n, are nanoscale organic/inorganic hybrids at the molecular level with a caged structure. Currently, the main methods for POSS synthesis include direct hydrolysis condensation, partial condensation with a top-angle band cap, functional group derivatization, side group transformation, silicon hydrogenation reaction and structural rearrangement of caged sesquisiloxanes.

Different synthesis methods can be used to prepare POSS with special functional groups and a variety of chemical properties, and due to its special organic-inorganic structure, POSS can be formed with a variety of polymers to form POSS/polymer hybrid materials at the molecular level. With our proprietary technology, VILO has prepared a wide range of POSS structures. End-users can make POSS/polymer hybrids according to the functional groups of POSS and the structural characteristics of the polymers, or co-develop them with VILO to expand the applications of POSS/polymer. Common preparation methods for POSS/polymer hybrid materials include copolymerization, grafting, chemical cross-linking, blending and atom transfer radical polymerization (ARTP).

The POSS materials developed by Villeroy & Boch can improve coatings: ◆ Scratch resistance; ◆ Provide adhesion; ◆ High light transmission; ◆ Provide heat resistance.

As a new type of application material, POSS structure is favored by more and more application engineers because of its three-dimensional structure and the ability to hybridize polymers, etc. Vela Optical welcomes to discuss more applications of POSS with application engineers from all parties.
