INS insert injection molding process is a term used for high tensile in-mold injection molding in the automotive industry. This process is the use of thermoforming or high-pressure molding methods, the transfer of good ABS film or ABS + PMMA for three degrees of stretch, and then according to the product shape cut out inserts, and then accurately placed in the injection mold cavity, injection molding. Some manufacturers also call it IMF: In-Mold Forming, which refers to high tensile IML. INS main products: automotive interior trim products, dashboard trim, sub-instrument panels, door trim, rear armrests, signs, etc.

● Membrane

INS diaphragm is ABS film or ABS+PMMA, generally 0.5mm thick, PMMA accounts for about 25% of the total, i.e. 0.125mm. Because PMMA has better scratch resistance compared to ABS, there are more composite diaphragms made of ABS+PMMA for automobile interiors at present.

The membrane of INS is similar to IML, which also needs to be molded first. Since the material is ABS/ABS+PMMA, its molding generally adopts air-medium pressure molding.

● Process Flow

INS process: Film pre-absorption - High-pressure molding - Punching off excess film edges - In-mold injection molding.

● Summary

The INS process is basically the same as IML, except that the degree of stretching is higher, and there are also differences in the choice of film materials. The main reason for introducing INS film is that it is widely used in the automotive industry, and the film is basically imported, which is different from conventional IML.

INS film is the biggest difficulty lies in the balance of stretch and hardness, generally speaking, high tensile product surface hardness will be relatively weak, if the hardening in the post-processing will lose the original intention of the INS film, which requires INS film structure inside the hardening layer (also known as UV transfer adhesive) both high tensile and high hardness, WILIGHT according to customer demand, combined with the company's technology platform launched the thermal UV double Curing hardening solution can be a good solution to the two contradictory problems of stretch and hardness, hot UV double curing heat curing can have very good tensile properties, tensile strength of up to 200%, and at the same time has a high degree of hardness, PET, PMMA substrate hardness of 1H or more, at the same time, the product has a very good weathering properties, to meet the automotive interior industry, anti-ultraviolet aging needs.

At present, the unit price of trim film is decreasing globally, and its use is gradually expanding due to the decrease in price, and the market is expected to expand steadily in the future. In Japan, the use of OMD (TOM) films for automotive interiors is expanding, and production by major manufacturers is expected to rise as a result of this expansion.

In the China region, demand for OMD films for keyboards and home appliances is increasing due to environmental measures such as strict control of paint usage, and their market size is expected to expand.

And IMF/IM-L film (for automobiles) has the potential to extend its application to designs such as touch panels for in-vehicle displays, and its use in navigator housings is also increasing. The application of this film is mainly centered on automobile manufacturers in Korea, North America, and Europe, and is gradually extending to China, where the use of coatings is being controlled, and the demand for substitution of decorative films is expected to grow.
