With the development of automated driving technology, vehicles will gradually turn into the third space of people's lives, and their use scenarios require innovative HMI solutions with stronger interactive experiences. To show this new type of usage scenario, the concept of intelligent cockpit has become more and more popular in recent years.

In the intelligent cockpit, the traditional button surface will become a set of decorative, touch control, lighting and other elements as a whole, this is what we often call the intelligent surface. These surfaces offer a more comfortable user experience and are full of futuristic technological elements. To cope with these changes, suppliers are constantly developing and replacing their own technologies.

IMD (In-mold Decoration) is one of the main molding processes for interior trim parts in today's automobiles, where the film is injected into the mold. Nissei is one of the earliest companies to conduct research and development of film decoration technology, and its program is divided into two main types: roll-to-roll continuous production of IMD (many manufacturers refer to it as the IMR process); and in-mold labeling IML ( In - mold Labeling ). The difference between the two is whether the outermost carrier film is removed or retained after molding.

How can IMD technology be used to produce automotive trims that better meet the needs of the future? Today, I'll take a look at the new IMD technology process innovations.

IMD products with real material touch

In-mold decorative technology is widely used in the production of automotive interior and exterior trim with fast molding and high efficiency, but this industrialized product has a natural disadvantage that the surface of its products are all uniform film surface. Compared to real wood, real aluminum and other real materials with special texture, bumpy touch, IMD products will give consumers a single and too common plastic feeling.

Through new printing technology and film processing, it is finally possible to add a variety of textures and tactile sensations to the surface of the product. This solution avoids the cheap feeling of plastic appearance, thus greatly enhancing the added value of in-mold injection molded products.

For example, in the case of a film that achieves a soft touch like a baby's skin, the outermost layer of the film does not have a high-gloss surface as in conventional solutions, but rather an uneven texture is added to better simulate the real touch.

In addition, the expressive power of the texture can be further improved by combining it with a textured mold. A more realistic texture can be expressed.
